Selling yourself to yourself

As a follow-up to last week’s post “The Upside of Self-Doubt,” I thought it would be good to repost an old blog about a method I have gotten away from that I need to reestablish and emphasize.  We need to remember that many of the thoughts we will have about ourselves today are not helpful.  They are direct shots at our self-esteem and wellbeing.  I like the concept that if someone said to you what you often say to yourself you would never speak to that person again. 

An Important Book

A book that was strongly recommended by Tim Ferris in his book "The Four Hour Work Week" was "The Magic of Thinking Big" by David J Schwartz.  This book, originally published in 1959, has been hugely influential in my life since I first read it.  One of the methods Dr. Schwartz mentions to help with fear and self-doubt is to make a commercial selling yourself to yourself. 

How to make your commercial

You should create a 30 to 60-second commercial that you write down in a notebook or journal.  Every morning when you are going through your morning routine, you read aloud your ad to yourself.  Then during your day reread your commercial.  After a few times, you will have it memorized, and you will be able to recite it quickly.  However, I would keep the notepad with you or set the alarm on your phone to remind yourself to recite your commercial aloud.

Stuart Smalley

The first time I read about this method my immediate thought went to the old SNL skit with Stuart Smalley.  The self-help character created by Al Franken. I chuckled a few times and then I wrote out my script and began reading it several times during the day.  In fact, at times I still chuckle and think of Stuart while I am reading it out loud.  So what.  The bottom line is that it works.  What we repeatedly think about ourselves we become.  This method will plant those seeds in your subconscious mind and let the subconscious do the work.  Reading it out loud will establish a stronger mental imprint. The result, at least for me, has been less self-doubt.

If you create this simple ritual in your life, you will see results.
