If you want to change your life change your story

If you want to change your life, change your story.

I continue to reevaluate who I am as I read the excellent book "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari.  A book I highly recommend.  It is one of the most thought-provoking books I have read in a long time, perhaps ever.

Universal Laws

When you examine the world we live on and the universe that we are a part of there are some universal laws that must be followed.  For example, gravity applies throughout the universe as far as we know.  Our planet and solar system along with our galaxy are affected by other much larger structures throughout the universe.  On this planet, if I have an object in my hand and I let it go it will fall to the ground.  Gravity is not completely understood yet it works and is universal throughout the known galaxy.  There are other physical laws and laws based upon quantum physics or how light and energy work such as E=MC².  Whatever your beliefs are these laws are indifferent to them.  They work whether you are an Atheist, Muslim, Democrat, or Anarchist.  These laws were in place long before there were humans.

Everything else is just stuff we made up

I’ll let you in on a little secret except for these universal laws everything else in the human world is just stuff we made up.  All human laws, social etiquettes, nationalities, religions, philosophies, social orders, politics, borders, money, etc.  It is all just stuff that is made up.  It isn't real; it is collectively agreed upon to accept this so called truth.  These ‘truths’ are implanted in our minds at such a young age we will continue throughout of lives to believe them, yet all of these things are not real.  They are just stories we tell ourselves.  Say for example that you claim to be a German.  Well, Germany doesn't exist except for on a map and in the minds of people.  Now your ancestors might have originated from that region of the world, but that was probably long before there was a country known as Germany.  My point is that who you think you are is just a chronical you tell yourself.  I was born by such and such parents my last name is this, and I am from the midwest of the USA, etc.  All of that is just a story.  So it would stand to reason if you want to change your life then change the allegory.  You can begin to create a new tale.  It is a narration that can be continually created because we only have the present moment.  The past is just a life story.  Perhaps you assume it is is based on authentic memories, but most memory research shows that often our memories are inaccurate.  So who you think you are is probably not even correct.

Well, then who are you?

Take a moment and think about your story.  Do you like your story?  Do you know why you do or don’t like your story?  Who you think you are and the reasons why you either like your story or not is most likely due to social norms.  Social norms or beliefs such as the idea of what success is.  Imagine what the definition of success was 70,000 years ago.  I believe then the definition of success would be if you survived that day.  It is up to you how you want to tell the rest of your story from here on out.  I believe that is important while examining your story to think about who you are.  Not what nationality you are or the name you were given.  Take away all that you believe defines who you are.  Well, who are you?  I bet you can’t answer that question if you are honest with yourself.  Just keep asking the question.  Although this idea and belief is also something that was made up so who knows.  It is just a story I tell myself.
